Matt Mahan is by far the most sensical politician I've heard in recent years. I agree 100% with every point he made. I only hope that he can keep this attitude and fulfill the promises when he gets elected. We don't need another PR professional running this state; we need somebody who is willing to make the necessary decisions in order to deliver sensical results for everyone in CA and the US as a whole. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan supports sanctuary city policies and opposes ICE operations in local communities. But yet he "believes in the rule of law". So really he is saying that his belief in the rule of law is dictated by his agreement with the law. Sorry, you can't have it both ways. If someone steals your car or burglarizes your home, that's not considered a violent crime, so no deportation for the perpetrator.

This is definitely a very capable politician. If the governor of CA has to be a democrat, I think he may be the best. However, Friedberg, you didn’t ask him two most important questions: why are you a democrat, and what is your stance on the SAVE Act and those objecting it in the congress? Without clear answers to these questions, everything else could be deceiving.

Im a lifelong Republican and I was astounded to hear a Democratic candidate conceded that our school system is behind Mississippi despite spending far more money and that Austin has far cheaper housing BECAUSE THEY REDUCED REGULATIONS. He has far too much honesty and common sense to get elected.

The step up in capital gains at death is not a gap - it is in place to work jointly with the estate tax, to avoid the descendants having to look through the dusty folders of grandpa to figure out what he paid for some stock to establish basis, i.e. you pay estate tax on the gross and get the step up to avoid double taxation, and it avoids massive fraud and impossible loads on and fees from executors. And before everyone says 'estate tax is toothless' that is not true, it is actually quite difficult and expensive to avoid estate tax -- there are only a few tactics eg selling forward, that can be closed out. A fair system would be elect to (a) pay estate tax + get basis step up, or select (b) establish basis and pay simplified cap gains with no estate tax. Then close all the borrowing against assets loopholes, including forward sales. And cap gains should be simplified and estate/cap gains rate be equalized. If the estate tax was around 20% with almost no loopholes, almost no one would try to game it. Note that almost all estate tax schemes result in major expense, hassle and loss of control. Have worked with many wealthy and almost all would prefer paying a chunk and be done. It would also be easy to deal with private businesses and farms - at 20% the tax on almost all such assets could be financed over eg 10 years so heirs would be able to keep these businesses going

San Jose for YEARS has not responded to police calls where the perp was of a certain race so a lot of perps were NEVER arrested and citizens went without protection. They have also made felonies misdemeanors so they could claim they have lowered the crime rates. A degree in Social Studies from Harvard with no real work experience that would qualify him to be Governor. He is trying to appear as a moderate and he isn't. We need audits everywhere. What I want to see on the federal and state level is our executives and legislatures not being able to exempt themselves from the crimes they commit. And, the governor shouldn't be able to take money from companies as a gift! If they pass a law, they need to abide by it too. Too many corrupt politicians in California. It didn't use to be this way. This one party rule will only get us more of the same.

Kudos to the All-in team for getting Matt for this interview. As a San Jose resident, it’s clear his intentions are in the right place, and we desperately need that focus on local accountability. To be frank, I feel even Newsom hasn't been as bad as people claim—he often acts like a dam holding off the ultra-left ideology that’s become so prevalent in the modern Democratic party. However, the biggest hurdle we face in California is this one-party system. Without real competition, there’s no accountability. If not a Republican alternative, the state badly needs a third party that moves past divisive litmus tests on guns or abortion and focuses strictly on the core issues impacting our daily lives.

I think the WASPY kid from Watsonville, California might have a neat conversation with a WASPY gramps farmer from Selma, California in the Central Valley (gramps also has a part-time gig at Stanford Hoover Institute).
