This interview honestly won me over—you’ve got my vote. But your TV ads? They sound like every other generic campaign, and they don’t reflect what actually made you stand out here. What grabbed me was that you’re talking about: • Cutting wasteful spending • Stopping endless bills that go nowhere • Being practical with the massive budget California already has instead of just promising more money • Holding homeless drug addicts accountable when they repeatedly refuse help That’s what made me think, “finally, a normal person saying something that actually makes sense.” Your commercials lean into the same lines about reducing homelessness and more affordable housing that voters hear every cycle—and at this point, people just turn it out. If you said what you said in this interview in your ads, you’d stand out in a big way. I want you to win—lean into what makes you different!

The step up in capital gains at death is not a gap - it is in place to work jointly with the estate tax, to avoid the descendants having to look through the dusty folders of grandpa to figure out what he paid for some stock to establish basis, i.e. you pay estate tax on the gross and get the step up to avoid double taxation, and it avoids massive fraud and impossible loads on and fees from executors. And before everyone says 'estate tax is toothless' that is not true, it is actually quite difficult and expensive to avoid estate tax -- there are only a few tactics eg selling forward, that can be closed out. A fair system would be elect to (a) pay estate tax + get basis step up, or select (b) establish basis and pay simplified cap gains with no estate tax. Then close all the borrowing against assets loopholes, including forward sales. And cap gains should be simplified and estate/cap gains rate be equalized. If the estate tax was around 20% with almost no loopholes, almost no one would try to game it. Note that almost all estate tax schemes result in major expense, hassle and loss of control. Have worked with many wealthy and almost all would prefer paying a chunk and be done. It would also be easy to deal with private businesses and farms - at 20% the tax on almost all such assets could be financed over eg 10 years so heirs would be able to keep these businesses going

  • @myboyboris · 1 like Mar 30, 2026

A path to residency without the right to vote sounds good but how long would it be before getting them the vote becomes the Democrats big issue?

  • @terryroberts623 · 1 like Mar 28, 2026

The CA school system, that I went through, brainwashed a lot of people and they are lost to us. They are forever ruined - I have them in my own family. It is sad and maddening.

  • @pumpinz · 1 like Mar 25, 2026

I’ll pass on this one. Don’t live or plan to visit California anytime soon.

i want to know his thoughts on healthcare

  • @CarolSerrano-b1i Apr 21, 2026

This was a great interview. Please interview the other top candidates as well, and do it as soon as possible.

  • @Jeepinjester Apr 17, 2026

I did not see the mindset, solutions, or energy required. Good bureaucratic talk though.

  • @goldnutter412 Apr 17, 2026

But paralysis makes for good facilitation taxation 😂 End that bs ASAP ! good man👏

  • @trippstreehouse Apr 17, 2026

Thanks for exposing this politician. I knew nothing about him.

  • @jamestagg2152 Apr 11, 2026

Saving California! XD No things have to get WAAYYY worse before they can get better.

  • @dewaynerosene Apr 7, 2026

I hope Californians are listening to this man. He is clearly the person for the job in his state and perhaps the country in the not to distant future. If he can turn California around his future and that of the party are bright.

  • @gracesarmorE6.10-18 Apr 6, 2026

San Jose for YEARS has not responded to police calls where the perp was of a certain race so a lot of perps were NEVER arrested and citizens went without protection. They have also made felonies misdemeanors so they could claim they have lowered the crime rates. A degree in Social Studies from Harvard with no real work experience that would qualify him to be Governor. He is trying to appear as a moderate and he isn't. We need audits everywhere. What I want to see on the federal and state level is our executives and legislatures not being able to exempt themselves from the crimes they commit. And, the governor shouldn't be able to take money from companies as a gift! If they pass a law, they need to abide by it too. Too many corrupt politicians in California. It didn't use to be this way. This one party rule will only get us more of the same.

  • @pdc88 Apr 6, 2026

David, outstanding data-oriented, non-partisan political discussion, refreshing (this type of political discussion would make a great podcast). Matt, California needs you and the United States needs more politicians like you. I'll be donating and perhaps volunteering.

  • @cyhc Apr 6, 2026

Friedberg comes through with another great interview. Matt is likely our best shot at turning the ship around for the dumpster fire we call the state of California. As a resident of SJ, he’s done an amazing job here so far and I hope he can do the same for Cali.

  • @jasontroll Apr 6, 2026

    love this

  • @ren1018 Apr 6, 2026

Wow, Mahan is refreshing to hear, he's got my vote

  • @sacstatesfinest Apr 6, 2026

Friedberg got a Craig Sager thing going on with that suit jacket. 😂

  • @MattHollandOfficial Apr 6, 2026

Mahan is a breath of fresh air. He's got my vote 10000%

  • @ElenaDelgado-ch5fx Apr 6, 2026

This is a great discussion. Matt Mahan, you sound more like an independent candidate and you may be the gubernatorial antidote this state needs. You got my vote.

  • @benandcullensoldchannel2087 Apr 6, 2026

A message all Americans need to keep in mind: A government powerful enough to give you everything, is powerful enough to take it away.

  • @noorsinghrai Apr 6, 2026

    This guy is surprisingly competent

  • @sa0562rkis Apr 5, 2026

This guy makes sense. He did do all those things he said in san jose. I live in san jose. Vote for him

  • @Mikey-T-Abroad Apr 5, 2026

Matt comes across as incredibly articulate and smart. Maybe California has a chance!!

  • @jovelynmartin8820 Apr 5, 2026

Voting for Chad Bianco Our beloved Sheriff here in Riverside County. He is tough on Crimes and a True Leader who have proven service to Riverside communities. 🇺🇸💪🏼❤️

  • @orangeadvan Apr 4, 2026

I'm not sold. He recognizes the issues but has nothing on the table

  • @lawrencesmith9059 Apr 3, 2026

We need to put all the lawyers in jail and then make them prove that they should be let out.

  • @gisellebelanger_therapist Apr 3, 2026

Very inter to hear how convoluted the laws and regulations have caused ridiculous situations for California, apart from the immense corruption! It’s sickening and disgusting!

  • @TZH34 Apr 2, 2026

50% of our tax dollars go to fraud, waste, theft. And no one is going to do anything about it.

  • @persistentone34 Apr 2, 2026

For a Democrat to tackle these issues in such a factual and straightforward way is unprecedented. If he can deliver on these ideas as Governor, this guy has presidential potential.

  • @Ran-q4b2l Apr 2, 2026

"some things are more important than others." wow! That is a tough concept for Dem's to accept, I'm glad to hear Matt say that.

  • @familytube_ss Apr 2, 2026

Kudos to the All-in team for getting Matt for this interview. As a San Jose resident, it’s clear his intentions are in the right place, and we desperately need that focus on local accountability. To be frank, I feel even Newsom hasn't been as bad as people claim—he often acts like a dam holding off the ultra-left ideology that’s become so prevalent in the modern Democratic party. However, the biggest hurdle we face in California is this one-party system. Without real competition, there’s no accountability. If not a Republican alternative, the state badly needs a third party that moves past divisive litmus tests on guns or abortion and focuses strictly on the core issues impacting our daily lives.

  • @culottiforcalifornia Apr 2, 2026

I think the WASPY kid from Watsonville, California might have a neat conversation with a WASPY gramps farmer from Selma, California in the Central Valley (gramps also has a part-time gig at Stanford Hoover Institute). The conversation would be lit and the kid might learn the Heritage Hispanics in the Central Valley are fed up with illegal immigrants.

Idea: bring back the pledge of allegiance. The Lord’s Prayer too. Optional but unhindered and encouraged around the flagpole every day.

  • @thedude7319 Mar 30, 2026

48:00 supreme court rulinf here is bunk because it has created an obligatory different treatment to the old and young which is also illegal

  • @RobotProctor Mar 30, 2026

    If you have to ask

  • @marthajohnson2775 Mar 29, 2026

Matt Mahan seems more than qualified to be Governor of California. I enjoy Friedberg's interviews. He has interesting guests and he asks questions many people would ask if given the chance to do so.
